G. S. RAMCHAND

G. S. RAMCHAND
26 Jul 1927 - 8 Sep 2003.

Gulabrai Sipahimalani Ramchand, the all-rounder from Sind and later Bombay, a colossus at the domestic level, somehow failed to realise his full potential in the Test arena. Though the first Indian to score a pair on Test debut (it was Fred Trueman's too) GS worked his way up meritoriously...

Ramchand is credited with captaining India to her first ever Test victory over Australia, way back in December 1959 at Kanpur, the match popularly known as Jasu Patel's Test...

A hard hitting batsman and a brave fielder, a commentator remarked about his bowling -  "looked every inch a fast bowler until he actually bowled"...

Making a forgettable debut in June 1952 against England at Headingley, Ramchand played 33 Tests scoring 1180 runs, 2 hundreds and 5 fifties, a topscore of 109, 41 wickets and 20 catches. The illustrious allrounder bid farewell to international cricket in January 1960 against Australia...

From 145 first-class games Ramchand scored 6026 runs, 16 hundreds and 28 fifties with a topscore of 230*, 255 wickets and 105 catches...

Ramchand continued to play for Bombay till 67/68, and was employed with Air-India. He gave cricket his all, and was the team manager on several occasions including the inaugural World Cup in 1975...

He passed away in Mumbai after a cardiac arrest, this day, in 2003...
