P. G. JOSHI
(7 Oct 1926 – 8 Jan 1987)

Baroda born Padmanabh Govind "Nana" Joshi was a right-handed wicket-keeper batsman who played for India between 1951 and 1960...

Joshi arrived on the scene at a time when India had three or four wicket keepers more or less of the same class. Thus being in and out of the eleven, Joshi played just 12 Tests in a career which lasted for almost a decade...

Joshi made his Test debut in November 1951 against England at Delhi, and played his last in December 1960 against Pakistan at Bombay....

In 12 Tests  Joshi scored 207 runs @10.89, just one half century 52* - in his last Test innings - as his highest, 18 catches and 9 stumpings...

Representing Maharashtra from 1946/47 to 1964/65 Joshi played 78 first class matches scoring 1710 runs @16.93, the lone 100* as highest, 8 fifties, 120 catches and 61 stumpings...

Joshi was brilliant in the first innings of his debut Test, but his errors in the second helped England save the match. Joshi had to hand over the gloves to Madhav Mantri for the second Test, who made way for Probir Sen in the third. Joshi was recalled for the fourth and then discarded in favour of Sen for the final Test. Sen's five stumpings in that Test kept Joshi out of the England tour of 1952. He was however picked for the West Indies (1952/53) and England (1959) tours, playing three Tests each...

The first Test at Bombay against Pakistan of the 1960/61 series proved to be Joshi's final one. He managed to drop a simple catch of Hanif Mohammad off Ramakant Desai in the fifth over of the match. The beneficiary then on 12, went on to score 160. Though Joshi subsequently scored his career best knock of 52 not out and added 149 for ninth wicket with Ramakant Desai, still an Indian ninth-wicket record, he never found favour with the selectors again...

Joshi, who captained Maharashtra between 1960–61 and 1962-63, also served on the Maharashtra cricket selection committee later on...

An Arts graduate, Joshi worked for Standard Vacuum and Hindustan Petroleum in Pune...

Joshi passed away in Pune this day, in 1987, losing his battle against liver cancer. He was just over 60...
